The students from Summitview School in Grande Cache went to Susa Creek School to visit for an afternoon. The students were greeted by two "hosts" (student volunteers) who gave them a quick tour of the school. Then the children settled together in a classroom where the Susa Creek students presented a slideshow about their school to the Summitview students. They were then invited to take part in a smudging circle. Here the students were taught about the importance of smudging and some different ways to do this. The children then ventured outside where they gave the Summitview students a tour of Susa Creek Community. The tour included visiting the smoke house where they learned about how meat is dried and stored; the creek where hides are tanned (It is a moose skin that is in those pictures that is being prepared); and to some sacred sites where ceremonies take place. We then went back to the school for a traditional snack of bannock, jam and muskeg tea. The kids then spent some time visiting and eating. Overall, the day was a success and it seemed that there were many friendships beginning to blossom!
We would like to thank Summitview School, Susa Creek School, and Aseniwuche Winewak Nation for their contributions to make this first event a success.
